The very first 5G Redmi was released in India ‒ all you need to know about Note 10T 5G

The new Redmi Note 10T 5G is the first 5G smartphone from the Redmi Note 10 series to hit India and it’s safe to say that the manufacturers are now actively focusing on 5G.

The Xiaomi brand dropped four of the Redmi Note 10 series devices in India before the Redmi Note 10T 5G and those were the Redmi Note 10, Redmi Note 10S, Redmi Note 10 Pro, and Redmi Note 10 Pro Max. They cost anywhere from Rs 12,000 and Rs 22,000 and Xiaomi’s idea was to leave out the 5G element altogether. According to the company, the reason for this was that Xiaomi found that by the time 5G becomes the norm in India, all those new phones will undoubtedly be outdated. Notwithstanding, Xiaomi is now proudly flaunting its new baby ‒ the Redmi Note 10T 5G, which became available in the country on July 20.

Because the phone is called Note 10T 5G, we can safely assume that the 5G feature is indeed present. And it is. Perhaps this means that all brands will now try and top each other off in terms of 5G support. Approximately a year ago, OnePlus Nord hit the shelves and this was the cheapest 5G device in the country back then. Mere twelve months later, and solid 5G options cost less than Rs 15,000. However, the 5G uprise isn’t even close to being complete.

Xiaomi’s main opponent Realme revealed that all the smartphones costing more than Rs 15,000 will enjoy the 5G option and its ‘offspring’ Poco also introduced the Poco M3 Pro 5G for less than Rs 15,000.

One thing worth noting, however, is that Xiaomi is a veteran when it comes to 5G. It’s dropped so many smartphones and pretty much all of them provided 5G. Nevertheless, the new Redmi Note 10T 5G will be the 5G debut for the Redmi sub-brand. Additionally, the device is considered a remake of the Redmi Note 10 5G, which was released before in India, but it was known as the Poco M3 Pro 5G.

Poco’s device had a specific outlook, but the hardware is unchanged. That’s why we were curious to find out whether Xiaomi will separate the Redmi Note 10T 5G and the Poco or will instead copy and paste the specifications.

Xiaomi even set up a dedicated microsite before the release to present the anticipated device earlier than it reached the stores. From the first overview, the design looked nothing like the Poco M3 Pro 5G. If anything, the Redmi Note 10T 5G reminds us of the Redmi Note 10 Pro from around four months ago.

As per usual, Xiaomi didn’t initially announce the specific features of their new product but most of us assumed that, because of the current market, the Redmi Note 10T 5G would feature a 6.5-inch full-HD+ display that provides a 90Hz refresh rate. Additionally, we guessed that it would be powered by an octa-core MediaTek Dimensity 700 SoC with as much as 6GB of RAM. It was also predictable that the phone would run Android 11 with MIUI on top.

One thing customers were excited about was the possibility of a triple rear camera system that provides a 48-megapixel primary sensor with the addition of an f/1.79 lens and a 2-megapixel macro shooter plus a 2-megapixel depth sensor. There was also talk of an 8-megapixel selfie camera sensor at the front (that provides an f/2.0 lens).

Those of us who are familiar with Xiaomi believed that the brand was going to proceed to implement the side-mounted fingerprint scanner and we were also sure there’d be a 5,000 mAh battery with 18W fast charging support in the new device. It was also pretty apparent that the new release will come with a USB Type-C charging port and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

One thing we couldn’t anticipate, however, was the price. Considering that Xiaomi increased the price of a couple of the Note 10 phones only a short while ago, a lot of us thought the new phone might be on the more expensive side. Most guessed something in the lines of Rs 15,000 ‒ Rs 20,000 for India but nothing was sure until the actual release.

The official sales in India begin on July 26 but, considering the Poco M3 Pro 5G (available in India from June), many people wondered why a brand would release the same phone in the same market with identical memory stats for the same amount of cash. Even if that brand is Xiaomi ‒ the king of rebranding.

Poco M3 Pro 5G, as well as the Redmi Note 10T 5G has 4GB/64GB and 6GB/128GB memory configurations and cost Rs. 13,999 for the 4GB + 64GB storage variant and Rs. 15,999 for the 6GB + 128GB. But maybe the idea is that they’ll appeal to different people.

One of the differences between the two phones is that The Poco M3 Pro 5G is only sold through Flipkart in India, whereas the Redmi Note 10 5G is available on Mi Home, Mi Stores, and retail partners, as well as Mi.com and Amazon.in. The colors it comes in are Chromium White, Graphite Black, Metallic Blue, or Mint Green.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that the Redmi Note 10T 5G is powered by the Dimensity 700 SoC, uses Android 11-based MIUI 12, and rocks a 6.5″ FullHD + 90 Hz LCD (1,080×2,400 pixels) and an adaptive refresh rate with 20:9 aspect ratio (with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection). It does indeed come with a side-mounted fingerprint reader for biometric authentication, and there’s also a 5,000 mAh battery with an 18W charging option. You should know that the adapter it’s sold with can reach 22.5W. And if you love taking pics, there are four cameras with this device ‒ an 8MP selfie shooter inside the punch hole, a 48MP main camera on the rear as well as a 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensor units (video recording is limited to 1080p 30fps). The camera is also supposed to feature a Pro Color Mode, Color Focus Mode, and a Night Mode. (Connectivity options include 5G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v5.1, GPS/ A-GPS, Infrared (IR) blaster, and NFC.) The claims are that the 10T gets Dual 5G SIM support and is also equipped with UFS 2.2 storage for faster transfer speeds.

The sensors on the phone are also pretty cool ‒ an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, gyroscope, magnetometer, and a proximity sensor. The phone’s size is 161.81×75.34×8.92mm and it weighs 190 grams so we can be confident that it’s comfortable.

Redmi note 10T 5G was originally released in Russia in June costing RUB 19,990 (roughly Rs. 20,100) for the 4GB + 128GB storage configuration.

After the specs have been pointed out, it ought to be mentioned that there are some differences between the Poco M3 Pro and the Note 10T. The most significant one is the ads. The Redmi Note 10T, similar to the rest of the Redmi phones, will show the user ads but that’s not how Poco M3 Pro works. Poco M3 Pro is based on a slightly tweaked version of MIUI. It’s also a shame that the Redmi Note 10T is dropping with MIUI 12, not MIUI 12.5, which indicates that the Redmi Note 10S is so far the only Xiaomi smartphone to come with MIUI 12.5. However, the Poco M3 Pro also operated with MIUI 12, but MIUI 12.5 should be arriving at both these phones at some point.

It’s a fact that the Redmi Note 10T and Poco M3 Pro are Xiaomi’s reaction to seeing that the market offers cheap 5G devices from Realme. (These devices are the Realme 8 5G, Narzo 30 5G, and Narzo 30 Pro 5G.) Having that in mind, it’s hard to picture what Redmi Note 10T’s place in the market would be, especially considering its price.

An additional aspect to factor in is that machines like Realme 8, Narzo 30 5G, and Narzo 30 Pro 5G provide almost the same if not better specs for the same cash. The Narzo 30 Pro 5G features more impressive hardware and support for more 5G bands if that’s what you’re looking for. The Redmi Note 10T price might attract some but if you desire to have a device that allows you to live in the future (which, by the way, is the entire idea of buying a 5G device of this sort) then maybe avoid the 4GB/64GB. And remember, these are the first prices to be released so keep in mind that they might be lowered at a later stage.

It’s not all bad, though, because in case you’re sure that you don’t need 5G, then Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 10S and Redmi Note 10 Pro (as well as the Redmi Note 10) are amazing phones for the price you pay. Similar to the Redmi Note 10S which came before it, the release of the Redmi Note 10T is confusing to begin with and the Poco M3 Pro’s only adds to that.

What do you think of the Xiaomi devices? Are you a fan of them? Would you buy any of them or any other 5G devices?
