Nintendo has different ideas to celebrate the 35th birthday of the launch of the first Super Mario series.
The company shared its ideas for remaking almost the whole catalog of Super Mario Bros, updated for the Nintendo Switch platform. Many enthusiasts will have the opportunity to use updated versions of Super Mario 64 (1997), Sunshine (2002) and Galaxy (2007). Nintendo promises to release a series of Super Mario 3D World (2013) Deluxe-version in 2020, as well as the long-awaited follow-up of Paper Mario.
So far, we have only public rumors, but the official detailed information of the upcoming celebration will be revealed once the animated film Super Mario is released and the Super Nintendo World attraction in the Universal Studios thematic park is opened.
As part of the birthday events, the company announced the release of the licensed Lego Mario kit, whose fans pass real “levels” by gaining coins.
Initially, it was planned to connect the event with the next Electronic Entertainment Expo scheduled for June. But due to the pandemic, E3 will not take place in 2020 and a digital storefront is perhaps the only real platform that can be considered so far. Nintendo refused to discuss these Mario rumors and called them gossip.
Nintendo held its last birthday event in 2015 when Mario turned 30. That time, Nintendo prepared thoroughly: they released an 8-bit Super Mario Amiibo, licensed for Trump Card, Hot Wheels and Moschino. As the curtain fell, Super Mario Maker was released.
Game development and sales are Nintendo’s core business. Nevertheless, the company has been paying more and more attention to the use of its common IT.
The Nintendo store was opened in Tokyo in the fall of 2019. The thematic park at Universal Studios Japan was supposed to be the next. Super Nintendo World will invite visitors in the summertime if the pandemic goes away.
The company has developed thematic clothes lines together with Uniqlo and Levis. Shuntaro Furukawa, the president of the company, has announced successes in expanding Nintendo’s community by involving IP that have nothing to do with videogames. The director Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed this in an interview with Famitsu. He said that he was ready to use the popularity of characters in collaboration with other corporations on a larger scale.
