Top 15 hangover remedies

A night of drinking is fantastic, but the effects the morning after may not be pleasant. Headache, stomach ache, nausea, weakness, and nervosity are not a complete list of the symptoms of a hangover you may face.

This article suggests several ways of preventing or coping with hangovers.

Drink more.

Water, I mean. Before the alco-party, during and after it. Seasoned party-makers say you have to drink two glasses of clean water for each glass of alcohol, and you’ll have no hangover. At least, it will decrease your alcohol intake. It is probably the most general piece of advice, but at the same time, it makes sense.

Alcohol can lead to dehydration for two reasons. Firstly, because it has a diuretic effect, in other words, it increases the production of urine, and consequently, leads to the loss of fluids and electrolytes. Secondly, drinking alcohol is associated with vomiting and diarrhea, which have the same results.

Generally speaking, drinking more water helps prevent and deal with other problems as well. Irritability, for instance.

Don’t go party on an empty stomach.

It is advisable to eat a fatty meal beforehand, for example, a pasta dish, beans on toast, and a good glass of milk. Fat will line up the walls of your stomach.

Alka-Seltzer

This old-school method is aimed at neutralizing stomach acid. Yet, unfortunately, it doesn’t cure headaches, fatigue, or any other hangover symptoms.

Drink alcohol, lighter in color

As you may have noticed, different types of alcohol have different aftermath. It is associated with the content of congeners. Darker in color drinks – red wine, dark beer, dark rum, – contain more congeners. To feel a bit better choose light color drinks – white wine, vodka, gin.

Sleep enough

Insufficient sleep can make the hangover symptoms worse, particularly headaches, fatigue, and nervosity.

Smoke weed

It helps deal with headaches and stomach problems, as well as improves appetite.

Cut out fizzy drinks

Consuming fizzy beverages speeds up the absorption of alcohol into your blood. It concerns cocktails on the basis of fizzy drinks as well (Coke, Sprite, etc.).

Have a healthy breakfast

Eating healthily after a heavy drinking night helps keep a steady sugar level in your body (as low blood sugar may cause fatigue and nausea). According to certain studies on hangover symptoms, a healthy breakfast to reduce hangover should include eggs, oatmeal, and yogurt – products including an amino acid L-cysteine.

Dishes containing zinc are also beneficial, such as seeds, dairy products, nuts, and whole-grain products.

Eat a banana in the morning or before going to bed as well, which will replenish the potassium levels in your body.

Work out

Though it may seem too hard to accomplish after a drinking night, it may be quite efficient.

Sweating washes away toxins from your body, and then makes you drink loads of water, which has the same effect.

Do not mix up different drinks

Alcohol drinks contain different congeners and thus may affect your body in different ways. There is nothing good in mixing them up.

Try food supplements

According to certain studies, some supplements make you feel better after drinking alcohol. They are red ginseng, ginger, prickly pear, borage oil, and eleuthero.

Walk home

It will help you sober up and get your mind clear. But be cautious, anyway, and find a partner to walk home together.

Take a pain reliever

Pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or aspirin, usually fight such symptoms as headache and muscle aches, so if you are in pain, they may come in handy.

Drink other beverages

Top hangover drinks include fruit juice, providing you with sugars and some essential minerals; milk, containing the calcium you need; ginger tea, dealing with nausea; hot water with lemon and honey, replenishing sugars and vitamins in your body; milk thistle tea, which is believed to be the best elixir to fight the hangover.

Coffee is not desirable, as it is a diuretic and may cause fluid loss.

Have a shower

Water washes away stress and fatigue from your body. However, the water shouldn’t be too hot.

To conclude, try to prevent the hangover, by moderating your alcohol intake. Stay hydrated, eat well, sleep enough and enjoy life!
