When things come to limiting, it’s always a two end sword, so we’ll view both sides equally. You chose if Volvo is acting a bitch or a concerned caring mother.

        So yeah, Volvo has said it’s about to put a speed limit from next year on their new cars. The limit is 180 kph. If you look at it from the marketing perspective it’s a quite smartass move, because they dedicate the limitation to many people who might get seriously injured or even killed because of excessive speeding”.

        Chief executive Hakan Samuelsson said: “While a speed limitation is not a cure-all, it’s worth doing if we can even save one life.” And that way Volvo is standing out empathically as fuck. In the meantime, Volvo is investigating different strategies on how to start smart speed control and “geofencing” technology that could automatically limit speeds around schools and hospitals in the future. On the one hand, it sounds nice but on the other hand, it’s kind of a Big-brother-is-watching-you style. Imagine driving your fancy smart Volvo, and suddenly you can’t control it anymore. Not to mention, the unpopular topic nowadays of Teslas freaking out on autopilots and leading to car crashes.

        Anyway, Volvo is trying to say, that maybe carmakers have the obligation to put in cars such technologies by default because they are the main guilt-carriers in the end. Flashback to 1959, when Volvo engineer Nils Bohlin invented the three-point seat belt there was also a discussion about the balance between free will and car makers’ responsibility to those inside their vehicles.

        For the record: a heck of the traffic fatalities in 2017 were caused by speeding. And the restrictions of the speed limit – 70mph (112 kph). Furthermore, in some cases people are being real tards, so technologies like this might get in handy.
