The Star Wars Further Fate: Taika Waititi Will Direct New Franchise Movie

What is dead may never die, but rises again, harder and stronger. This is not about the Star Wars universe.

Unfortunately, it is from another universe and does not apply to this. Six episodes, animated series, a lot of comics and books… I loved it all, like millions of fans around the world. And when I heard the news about the new Star Wars movie a few years ago, I was happy! Yes, I had thoughts that it was all just for the money, and it is unlikely that a masterpiece, like the previous parts, will turn out. But I could not even think that they would so screw the project up. This is just my opinion, but almost all franchise fans agree with me, l guess.

New Star Wars movies that ended this year were a mockery of George Lucas’s masterpiece. And we all hoped that after the failure of the last parts, the scriptwriters would calm down and let the project go. But no, they need more. Disney has officially announced new films in the Star Wars universe. And even worse, the role of the screenwriter was suggested to Taika Waititi.

The Star Wars

Rumors that Disney and Lucasfilm suggested director Taika Waititi one of the next parts of the Star Wars franchise appeared a few months ago. Now this project has been officially confirmed, and the bosses of the studio especially emphasize that it will be a full-fledged movie release and not a digital release for the Disney+ streaming platform.

The Star Wars

An official StarWars.com blog post indicates that Taika Waititi will become not only a director but also a co-author of a new film about the Star Wars universe. Christy Wilson-Cairns, who received a BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year on the three-time Oscar-winning film, 1917, will help him write the script. The name and exact release dates of the new film have not yet been disclosed. It is also not clear whether this will be a separate picture like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story or one of the parts of the new trilogy. Also, Emmy-nominated writer Leslye Headland (Russian Doll, Bachelorette) is currently developing a new untitled Star Wars series for Disney+. There will be three series on Disney+: the second season of Mandalorian; one based on Cassian Andor’s life; and the adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi between Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: A New Hope.

Earlier, Taika Waititi shot the final series of the Mandalorian for the Disney+ streaming platform and voiced the IG-11 robot-killer-nanny there. Disney also praised the director’s skill after working together on the movie Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and commissioned him to shoot the next part of the series Thor: Love and Thunder (2021). Well, the last creation of Taika Waititi “Jojo the Rabbit”, where he was a screenwriter, director and leading actor, received 6 nominations for Oscars 2020.

The Star Wars

Many consider him a terrific screenwriter. I am not particularly familiar with all of his works, but I did not like the last series of Mandalorian and especially Thor: Ragnarok. The series was quite good, but from the pretentious and super-powerful god of thunder and his brother, Waititi made clowns, and from an epic superhero movie a stupid comedy. I sincerely hope that this will not happen with Star Wars, but as a fan, I am very worried about the fate of the franchise…

Recall that Disney has scheduled the release of the next Star Wars movie series for 2022, 2024, and 2026. Currently, several new projects in the Star Wars universe are simultaneously in progress. In particular, the director of The Last Jedi, Ryan Johnson, is working on creating his own Star Wars trilogy, another full-length film on the universe is being prepared by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige.

The news is bad, but it’s still news. You can never know what lies ahead, so we are waiting for the films, and only then we can judge. In the meantime, you can review the first 6 episodes and enjoy the galaxy far far away.
