What Elon Musk’s New Shack House Looks Like
After promising to sell all of his properties, including six mansions in California, the billionaire, and Tesla CEO moved into a 398-square-foot modular home. Elon Musk’s home is located in Boca Chica, Texas, near where SpaceX makes Starship rockets.
One of the richest men in the world with a fortune of $169.8 billion rented a folding house made by the Boxabl startup. This shack looks like a studio apartment, and Musk says it costs about $50,000 – cheaper than some Tesla cars. The house can be easily disassembled and transported to another location, and then assembled in a few hours. “It’s pretty cool, actually,” tweeted Musk in June.

The studio space is divided into a bedroom and a living room. There is also a fully equipped kitchen and bathroom. Inside the house, there is everything you need for living: a refrigerator, a stove, washing and drying machines, a dishwasher.
And while Elon Musk’s new house is small and simple, it has its advantages – it is built with new technologies that make it resistant to fires, floods, rot, pests, high winds, etc. Boxabl houses are also more durable and energy-efficient than traditional ones, as they are made of concrete and steel. At the same time, the house is very light: one Tesla Model X is enough to transport it.
Boxabl makes turnkey modular homes and the price already includes electricity, heating, soundproofing, and thermal insulation. All the owner has to do is buy furniture. At the request of the customer, the filling of the house can be supplemented. The Boxabl home can also be modified with different configurations. The whole construction process resembles a Lego constructor.
Elon Musk Sells Houses
The 50-year-old billionaire first announced plans to sell all of his houses in 2020. Now he has almost kept his promise, having sold six of the seven properties. In June, Musk announced that he had decided to put his last house in the San Francisco Bay area up for sale – he used it for events.
The 47-acre site is located in Hillsborough County, California, halfway between San Francisco and Silicon Valley. The mansion is over 100 years old and has nine bedrooms and ten bathrooms. The total area of the house is over 16 thousand square feet. Musk bought the house in 2017 for $23.4 million and now plans to sell it for $37.5 million.
Musk got rid of real estate in Los Angeles last year, often with little or no profit. Elon Musk began selling houses after conflicts with the state of California. The billionaire criticized the work restrictions on the Tesla plant in the San Francisco Bay area last year, which the state imposed due to the coronavirus. Tesla then even filed a lawsuit, but later withdrew it. Musk also said that the state doesn’t value entrepreneurs. At the end of 2020, he decided to move to Texas.
It is unknown if Musk is renting any other houses in Austin. It is also unclear if he lives with his girlfriend, singer Grimes (who lives in Austin), and their ten-month-old baby X AE A-XII. Musk has five more children from his first marriage to Justine Wilson, but nobody knows where exactly they live.
