How Darth Vader enforces social distancing in the Philippines

Do you think you’d take lockdown more seriously if it was Darth Vader who told you that you MUST stay home?  In the Philippines, there are around 11,000 confirmed coronavirus cases, which naturally means a lot of people live in fear every day. Some, however, choose to focus on the positive. In Malabon, Metro Manila, Philippines the locals are having a rather fun take on what it means to really make people remain indoors during these hard times.

On National Star Wars Day (or May the 4th be with you) Philipino officers not only handed out relief goods to the people of the flooded Artex Compound but also dressed as the characters from Star Wars we all love (and maybe fear a tiny bit) ‒ Darth Vader and his loyal Stormtroopers. They encouraged people to stay home during the pandemic in order to maintain their health. It’s definitely a breath of fresh air to see an actual badass like Vader who bosses you around instead of a police officer.

Alexandria Ignacio, a Youth Leader in the village, who organized the whole thing, revealed the idea of Lego Darth Vader and Kids Stormtrooper costumes was to bring smiles to children and hopefully lower their stress levels. And it so worked! It’s so good to see someone finally figured out how to communicate with kids, especially during these serious times. The Star Wars characters reminded villages to stay indoors while patrolling on boats in costumes made from rubber and plastic. Pretty convincing, don’t you think?

One of the officials in the Trooper costumes shared that their task was to criticize people who weren’t following the orders of going outside only with a quarantine pass and those who weren’t wearing a protective face mask. I mean they’re all wearing a mask and managed to rule an empire, so maybe let’s follow their lead, okay? Unlike the actual Darth Vader and Stormtroopers, these officers haven’t fully turned to the dark side yet, but instead, they are trying to do some good. So, let’s acknowledge that and give them a round of applause!
